Dig For Banded Calcite Near Ponderosa
The Ponderosa Campground area is a known location for finding banded Calcite. It’s conveniently located south of Provo, UT, and the view while rockhounding is spectacular.
This location is excellent for families, junior rockhounds, and old-timers.
The banded Calcite can be found along the trail, along outcroppings, and large boulders. Keep an eye on the ground as you work your way up the trail. You’re bound to find a couple of pieces to put in your bucket.

Types of Calcite
You’ll be digging and collecting banded Calcite at this location and it’s fairly abundant.
- Banded Calcite – These large chunks of rock will show banding on the outside. The colors range from milky white to butterscotch to dark brown. The more distinct the banding the better the piece.
The Calcite is fairly easy to recognize because the banding will be exposed. If you don’t see any banding or small signs of banding then you should pass. There’s no reason to take lower quality specimens from this location because of the abundance.
Once you get back to the house you’ll be able to clean them up to see which pieces are best for lapidary work. These make for great cabochons, spheres, or free form pieces.
Tools For Collecting Calcite
If you’re new to rockhounding then stick with surface collecting and enjoying the scenery. There will be plenty of nice pieces to add to your collection.
You’ll want to come prepared for this trip by packing a variety of tools. Don’t forget snacks and hydration in case you get thirsty or hungry.
Check the weather early in the week so you dress appropriately.

- 5-gallon buckets
- Hat or sombrero
- Estwing rock hammer
- 3 lb hammer
- Small hand rake
- Small hand shovel
- Small garden tools
- Gloves
- Long pants
- Long sleeve (depends on weather)
- Boots
- Towels for drying off
- Fresh clothes (you’re going to sweat)
Services are nonexistent and bathrooms are nowhere to be found. So, you’ll want to bring everything you need or visit a local gas station before you venture out.
Camping is allowed at the Ponderosa Campground up the street from the dig site.
