Dig Agate and Collect Petrified Wood

Home » Montana » Dig and Collect Agate in Livingston Montana

You’ll be collecting Montana Agate and petrified wood at this river bed location in Livingston, MT.

This location has been written about in rock & mineral magazine and there are multiple YouTube videos showing ordinary rockhounds collecting beautiful Montana Agate.

You’ll spend most of your time picking up Agate and petrified wood on the surface which makes it an excellent location for families and junior rockhounds.

Montana Agate comes in all different shapes and sizes.  You never really know what you have until you slice it open with a lapidary saw.  If you discover a nice one then you’ll be pleasantly surprised because this Agate is perfect for cabochons.

Keep reading below to learn more about what to bring, clothing types, and driving directions.

Agate and Petrified Wood

You’ll be looking for two types of rocks at this location but don’t worry they’re pretty easy to find and they’re abundant.

  • Agate – round to oval-shaped nodules with quartz crystals or banded agate on the inside.
  • Petrified wood – is not as abundant as Agate but you might find a couple of pieces.

The Agate is perfect for cabochons and polishing while the petrified wood makes for a great specimen.

If you’re an avid collector of Agate then you’ll want to bring a couple of 5-gallon buckets and a big wheeled cart.  The additional weight will add up quickly.
