Dig for Agate in Columbia River Basin
If you’re looking for some killer Agate then we’ve located a great spot near the Columbia River Basin in Washington state.
You’ll be doing surface collecting along the river so make sure you bring plenty of buckets.
This location is excellent for families, junior rockhounds, and old-timers.
Agate can be found by walking along the river bank and collecting the water-worn nodules from the sand bar areas. Some rockhounds will work the embankments.

Types of Agate
You’ll be digging and collecting Agate at this location. Most of the water-worn rocks will show reddish-orange and white banding. You’ll also see brown-yellow banded nodules as well.
- Agate – Is part of the Chalcedony-Quartz family. This location produces small to medium-sized, water-worn nodules.
The nodules are fairly easy to recognize due to banding and patterns that can be seen on the exterior of the nodule.
Tools For Collecting Agate
If this is your first rock collecting trip, I’d advise you to start with surface collecting. You’re guaranteed to come home with a couple of keepers.
Rockhounds will want to pack a variety of tools for this trip. They should have snacks and drinks in case they get thirsty or hungry, as well as small containers or sacks to place their crystals in. Don’t forget about the weather and make sure to dress appropriately.

- 3-gallon buckets
- 5-gallon buckets
- Hat or sombrero
- Estwing rock hammer
- Small hand rake
- Small hand shovel
- Small garden tools
- Gloves
- Long pants
- Long sleeve (depends on weather)
- Boots
- Towels for drying off
- Fresh clothes (you’re going to sweat)
Services are nonexistent and bathrooms are nowhere to be found. So, you’ll want to bring everything you need or visit the gas station before you venture out.
